Starting a data governance program can be an exhilarating, yet daunting task. When tackling a new skill, we often assume that we have the basics down and jump right i nto the more “advanced” content. Implementing data governa nce is no different: Many institutions focus on the details of how to do th ings, and what technology can do them, without ensuring that everyone under stands what the things are. Without shared understanding and consistency, f rustration and mistrust grows, and can lead to multiple reboots of a data g overnance program. Our experience at the University of Rochester has b een no different. We have learned valuable lessons about the importance of starting with the basics, including definitional and data literacy work, th at are often overlooked or come as an afterthought when project adoption is failing. This presentation will outline the foundational work we have undertaken to increase the likelihood of success for our fledgling data go vernance program, including:
\n\n Data literacy: Are you sure everyone is speaking the same language?\n Community building: Building inclusivity across all data personas and business areas\n Structuring for success: Setting a solid foundation that can withstand failure without tumbling down\n Communication and change management: Creating a wildfire of behavioral change one spark at a time\n\n DTSTART:20191210T110000 SUMMARY:Don’t Forget the Basics: Lessons Learned from Bringing Data Governa nce to Higher Ed DTEND:20191210T114959 LOCATION: See Description END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
